MT IJEN, THE ONLY BLUE FIRE VOLCANO IN THE WORLD
Mount Ijen, located on the border between Banyuwangi and Bondowoso regencies in East Java, Indonesia, is a famous volcano known for its stunning turquoise crater lake and unique natural phenomenon — the “blue fire.” This electric-blue flame is caused by the combustion of sulfuric gases that emerge from cracks in the volcano and ignite when exposed to oxygen. It’s one of only a few places in the world where such a phenomenon can be witnessed, attracting hikers and photographers, especially those who trek at night to catch the flames before sunrise. The Ijen crater, or Kawah Ijen, also houses one of the world’s largest highly acidic crater lakes.
Aside from its surreal beauty, Mount Ijen is also home to one of the most physically demanding traditional jobs in Indonesia: sulfur mining. Miners carry heavy loads of bright yellow sulfur chunks, sometimes over 70 kilograms, from the crater floor up steep paths to be sold and processed. This harsh yet culturally significant activity gives visitors a glimpse into the resilience of local workers and the complex relationship between natural resources and livelihood. The combination of natural wonder and human endurance makes Mount Ijen a compelling destination for both adventure seekers and cultural travelers.
